BRING & BUY COFFEE MORNING

20th November 2002

Our Christmas Bring & Buy Coffee Morning was held on 20 November at the Old Rectory and was hosted by Paula Dormer, who organised the occasion. The event was well attended, not only by villagers but also their friends from South Weston, Aston Rowant, Watlington and beyond. Quite apart from the local cakes, scones and produce, we had several stalls selling Christmas gifts, jewellery, Tear Fund (products from the Third World) and candles. All this helped us to start to get the Christmas spirit going! The excellent morning, enjoyed by all, at the time of going to press has raised over £400 for St Margaret's Church with some further donations still to come in. I would like to thank Paula for hosting the event and the helpers, all those who gave items for the raffle and those who generously gave cakes, produce and other homecrafts. They all contributed to an excellent morning!

Oxford Historic Church Ride & Stride

I would like to express my thanks to those who took part in the "Ride & Stride" on 14 September this year. The number of those braving the elements was somewhat down on the previous year, but the result was nevertheless encouraging.

Our Riders & Striders raised £167.00 - half of which will be given directly to Lewknor Church.

I would wish particularly to thank Joan Baxter, who raised £124.50. This was a splendid effort and shows what can be done!! I would also like to praise and thank Val Bunce and Adrian and Janet Black's children for a very good result.

KRAKATOA PRE-SCHOOL

The damp, dull weather of late certainly hasn't affected the spirit of the children and our dedicated staff (we hope!)

Delicious warm soup has been made, a cake is in the offing and our Christmas plans are well under-way (including the first ever Krakatoa Christmas production!).

Our first term at the Jubilee Hall has been a huge adventure - hopefully enjoyed by all! We have had quite a few new children and hope that they, and their parents, enjoy their time at Krakatoa.

We will also be saying good-bye to Amy, Daniel, Thea, Ishbel and Josephine as they go off to "Big School" and wish them a wonderful and happy time there.

Our fund raising evenings went very well - thanks to Lisa Cumming for organising a Body Shop evening - and to Sue Graham for hosting it. Thanks also to Mark and James from "The Theatre of Flowers" in Caversham for some wonderful ideas and demonstrating some seemingly simple, but exotic, flower arrangements - which we will all be trying to imitate!

For information about Krakatoa (waiting lists, session times etc) please phone Penny on 01844 353727.

League of Friends of the Watlington & District Community Hospital

The League of Friends Committee, at a recent meeting, agreed that they would like to support the Watlington Charitable Trust in their aim to generate a 'Patients Fund' amounting to some £600K for the purpose of maintaining 2 beds for use by patients from Watlington and District at all times. We will be holding a Spring Fair on Saturday 8th March (10.30 - 3.30) in the Watlington Church Hall and all proceeds will go to the 'Patients Fund'. Please do make a note of this event in your 2003 diary and come along and support a very worthy cause.

Some of you will be aware of the voluntary driver scheme at Chalgrove which relies on voluntary contributions and the League of friends have made a donation of £100 towards this valuable service to Chalgrove residents.

If you have any enquiries do please contact either our Chairman: Ursula Clissold (01491 612361) or Secretary: Terry Bacon (01491 614332).

PARISH NEWS

Members of the Parish Council have been delivering packs of Queen Elizabeth Jubilee Stamps to all the children in the parish. They are a gift from the Parish Council to commemorate this special year. If you have not yet received yours, please contact Caroline Hjorth on 352720.

N.B. If you missed the School Bazaar this year you can still order Christmas Wreaths - phone Caroline, as above, about that too. You may have seen on the BBC last week about the Ridgeway Management Group trying to tackle the problem of 4 wheel drive vehicles wrecking the surface of the Ridgeway the whole length of the trail, including the stretch by Lewknor. Sadly the Management Group seems to think it necessary to carry out further 'assessments'. This, in the view of the National Trails Office and our Parish Council is irresponsible as it is obvious that unless the Ridgeway gets a chance to recover, the ability of walkers, cyclists and horse riders to use it will be lost forever.

It is very important that we make sure our views are known so please write if you can to the address below. The management group are asking for comments by the end of the year.

Write to:- Mr Furness, The National Trails Office, Cultural Services, Holton, X33 1QQ
