Obituary - MARJORIE VIOLET HOWLETT (MIDGE) Midge died at home on 8th January. St Margaret's Church, Lewknor was packed to capacity, and beautifully decorated for The Service of Thanksgiving for her Life on 16th January. The following is the tribute paid to Midge, during the Service. "Midge was born at 58 Green Street, High Wycombe. She had four sisters, Alma, Pam, Daphne, Eve and one brother Fred. Midge was an Usherette at the Regal Cinema in Wycombe and she would let her sisters in by the back door where they sometimes would see three films in one day! The sisters were always together. They would play "Tarzan" and "Jane" in the woods. Midge also worked in Woolworths at Wycombe, at the same time that Beryl Witney worked there. Midge was sixteen when she met Tom in the Snooker Hall in Wycombe. They later married and moved to Aston Hill. From there they moved to Chapel Street in Watlington and a further move just down the road to Pyrton, then finally settling in Lewknor. During these years three daughters were born, Patricia, Sue and Carol. Midge never let her illness get her down and she loved to go to Wycombe shopping, no doubt reliving some childhood memories. She made many friends at bingo sessions in various places, going to coffee mornings at the Leathern Bottle Pub and on numerous coach trips, particularly to Weymouth. Midge and Tom took frequent holidays in Weymouth and made more friends there too. Even after Tom died Midge went on holiday to Weymouth every year. Midge will be remembered for her love of brightly coloured clothes, long earrings and a smile to brighten up the dullest day. She will be sadly missed by all that knew her, especially Patricia, Sue and Carol, Grandchildren Anita, Hayley, Stephen, Keith and Great Granddaughter Emily who was born on the 23rd December and Midge was able to see and hold her, much to the family's joy. Finally special thanks to the District Nurses especially Tracey who has known Midge for many years and has been a tower of strength to Patricia, Sue and Carol. Also to Dr Nicholson, Marie Curie Night Care Nurses and the ICCS Team from Wallingford. Without these people Midge would not have been able to stay at home which was her wish." Patricia, Sue and Carol have asked us to add their own thanks:- to Joanna and Jackie for the lovely flowers in the church; to all the people who came to the church - it was lovely to see so many; to Simon, the vicar for a lovely service; to Julie and Les for their kindness to Mum when Dad died; to all friends and neighbours who sent flowers; to Mum's neighbours Pat and Alistair; to friends who gave Mum lifts to Thame and Watlington; and finally a thank you for all the lovely cards and messages sent to us at this very sad time.

Volunteers - Special Education Needs More volunteers needed to support parents whose children have Special Educational Needs! 60 Independent Parental Supporters (IPS) are presently enjoying the opportunity to offer assistance or a listening ear to parents whose children have Special Educational Needs. Would you like to join them? Many people do not realise that one in five children have Special Educational Needs at sometime during their school career. The Parent Partnership Service of the Oxfordshire LEA run a successful scheme of support for parents whose children are experiencing difficulties. Parents may need someone to explain to them what the official letters mean or need help preparing for a meeting. Having someone who understands the process can make a big difference to an already worrying time. The Independent Parental Supporters meet together monthly to share experiences and often an interesting speaker talks to the group. All Independent Parental Supporters are offered training in:
Support, consultation and expenses will be provided for all volunteers. You could make a positive contribution and enjoy it at the same time. If you think you might be interested in becoming an IPS, please ring: Parent Partnership Helpline on 01865 810516
The Trustees of the Watlington Hospital Charitable Trust invite you to a performance of "Violet" A dramatisation in words and music of the life of Violet Gordon Woodhouse whose musical brilliance reawakened interest in the harpsicord in the early years of the 20th century, and who was notorious for living with four men. by Jessica Douglas-Home Jeremy Irons Lucy Fleming Maggie Cole Harpsicord on Sunday 3rd February 2002 at The Auditorium, Magdalen College, Oxford By kind permission of the President and Fellows The sale of tickets will benefit the Watlington Hospital Charitable Trust, which was set up when, in February 2000 and in spite of very strong opposition, Watlington Hospital was closed by the NHS. The lack of a local hospital creates a real void in the area. The Trustees plan to buy the hospital back from the NHS, and to set up an endowment fund for its maintenance. It will be used by the NHS, Social Services and others in need. Substantial funds are required to achieve this. With your support we now have a unique opportunity to recreate what the founders of the original hospital foresaw 125 years ago, and establish a modern nursing home/hospital which will not only provide beds for the elderly and those needing respite care, but generally serve the needs of the local community. Registered Charity no. 1083847 Tickets £25 each to include reception with wine and canapes. Reception 6.30pm, Performance 7.00 - 8.15pn. For tickets (early booking recommended) apply to: Miss P A Blackbourn, 71 Five Mile Drive, Oxford OX2 8HW Tel no. 01865 515246
SOBELL HOUSE VOLUNTARY SERVICES Sir Michael Sobell House Hospice is currently seeking new volunteers to join its 200-strong team, providing help for people with terminal illness. They particularly need people to work on the reception desk, hairdressers, qualified complementary therapists and retail assistants for the shops. They are also recruiting volunteers to join the bereavement support service, which will begin a training course in May. Volunteers are an essential part of the hospice team, and offer help in all areas of the House; the ward; day centre; reception desk and as drivers. Most volunteers offer three to four hours a week, and some weekend work is available. The volunteers spend a good part of their time in direct contact with patients, either by listening to them, helping with artistic or creative activities, or driving them to and from the hospice fromP their homes. There are also practical tasks such as serving drinks and meals, baking cakes, or shopping for essential supplies. Sobell House offers support and training for all new volunteers, and on-going training throughout the time they are with us. Initially, volunteers work alongside an experienced volunteer as they learn about the particular area they are working in. More information is available from Hilary Lloyd, Voluntary Services Manager, on Oxford (01865) 225868. Anyone interested in training for the bereavement support services should contact Di Rivers on 225878.
George Tebby of Stoke Talmage died suddenly, at the age of 81 years, on January 7th 2002 at the Old Stores, Stoke Talmage, the house in which he was born and lived in throughout his life. He was educated at Lord William's in Thame and upon leaving school followed in his father's footsteps as shopkeeper at Stoke Talmage village stores. The changes in retailing eventually led to the closing of the shop in the 50's and George spent the rest of his working life with Potters in Thame. He will, however, be known to many people in the area as the church organist starting at the age of 19 years at Adwell Church followed by over 40 years at Lewknor. His last post was as organist at Aston Rowant where he continued playing for 20 years until last month. George was a true countryman and took an interest in all aspects of rural life with a particular fondness for horses and a passion for wood. Stoke Talmage Church was filled to capacity for George's funeral - a testimony to the deep affection in which he was held. He will be remembered for his willingness to please, his quiet retiring modesty and for his loyalty to the church and the community he served so faithfully throughout his life. George's was a close knit family. He was a loving and much loved father and husband and leaves a widow, Pat and son, Edwin and daughter-in-law, Sandy. A memorial service for George will be held at Aston Rowant Church on Saturday 9th February at 11am.
ALPHA SUPPER - Friday 25th January Psalm 130 is a real cry for help, full of longing for mercy and by coincidence it was the Psalm Jonathon Aitken found himself reading on his first night in prison. He spent 7 months in prison during which he had plenty of time to explore his faith more. He, a disgraced ex-cabinet minister, jobless, bankrupt, divorced and branded a liar found grace in prison and goodness amongst hardened criminals. He attributes his conversion from 'a member of the church reticent' to an evangalising member of the church of England to an Alpha Course. For those of you who haven't come across Alpha it is a Christian series of talks entitled "Christianity - boring, irrelevant and untrue". The courses come with a free supper and friendship but with no commitment to buy at the end. I was deeply impressed by the rather scruffy Jonathon Aitken who spent a couple of hours with us at the school. He looked very different from the suave, glamorous liar who I was used to seeing all over the newspapers. I have tried to reason with myself that he is a politician who could argue black was white and did for some considerable time. He is a man who made his children lie for him and thought himself, by his own admission, pretty successful. He is equally a man who has been publicly ridiculed and shamed, he has been to the bottom and back sorting out his priorities on the way. However hard I try to be cynical about him I was impressed by a man who has such faith in Jesus Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit. Without wishing to turn Grapevine into the Church Magazine I urge you all to think about an Alpha Course (- details through Alison Maguire 281262). I was enormously impressed, or as the cynical amongst you will say taken in by, the grace in this man whom the world laughed at and God gave a second chance to. Lucy Picton-Turbervill
