As most of you know plans are well underway to build a new Hospital/Nursing Home to serve Watlington and district. The plans have been submitted and now some serious fund raising must take place if this ideal is to become a reality. The total cost of buying back the site and reconstruction of the new 60 bed hospital will amount to just over £4 million. Sanctuary Care will provide the finance for the building and equipment, around £2.6 million, but Watlington Charitable trust has to find the other £1.4 million. They already have promises by individuals, Trusts and other local charities and are approaching other major potential donors - but there is still a gap. How can we in Lewknor Parish help? The League of Friends of Watlington Hospital have been asked to have a Fête in aid of the Charitable Trust Fund - this will be held on SATURDAY AUGUST 25th 2 pm In the Hospital Grounds It was decided to ask all the villages (not forgetting Watlington!) to run a stall or activity at the Fête. Lewknor has been asked to do a RAFFLE - on the day at the Fête. You can help in 3 ways :- a) by donating a prize b) by giving an hour of your time on the day to help with selling tickets c) by attending the Fête and helping to make it a bumper occasion. If you can help in any way please contact Kay Hazlewood - 353783 or Alison Ellerton 354219. In the next few weeks there will also be other tickets on sale for the same fund raising - these tickets will be for a brand new small Rover Car. Hopefully the car will be on display on the 25th at the Fête and tickets will be available then - the draw for this raffle to take place in December. Naturally we hope that you will support Lewknor Raffle as well as this special one. We look forward to your support.
A "Mother and Toddler" Group is starting on Tuesday 26th June and every Tuesday thereafter during term-time. We will be at Lewknor school from 10-11am. If you can come, please bring £1.00 and a toy that your child can share with the others. Contact Alex - 353855 for more details.
Joanna Gordon's lovely garden, with the beautiful summer weather, proved to be an ideal venue for St Margaret's Bring & Buy Coffee Morning on Tuesday 26th June. There was an excellent display of home baked produce for sale. This stall is always a popular attraction. The book stall was busy and the Sales Table had a wide variety of surprises to keep us happy. Most of all everyone enjoyed a sitdown chat over coffee among the neighbours. The final sum achieved was £280.00 and the PCC much appreciate all the effort involved.
To: Grapevine From: Ian Orr-Ewing, Churchwarden and Chairman of the PCC "I was very sad to learn that the Rogation Sunday Barbecue in the churchyard had caused distress to Mrs Scott. I am sure I express the feelings of every single member of the PCC, when I say that the Barbecue was in no way intended to give offence, and we very much regret any distress, which may have been caused to anybody. I have consulted the Archdeacon of Oxford about this matter, and shall be proposing to the PCC that, on any future occasion when the Churchyard may be used for holding functions, we should rope off this area. Previously, the Rogation Sunday Barbecue has been held in the farmyard at Church Farm, next to the churchyard, but we were prevented from running the event there this year because of the 'Foot and Mouth' restrictions on the use of farmland and rights of way. Rogation Sunday is an important day in the Church Calendar, commemorating the work of farmers and seeking God's blessing on the harvest. May I conclude by thanking all those who supported the event and helped to raise money for the ARC-Addington Fund for families hit by the 'Foot and Mouth Crisis'. We raised £408.00 from the proceeds of the Barbecue and the Close Shaves Concert. This was trulky a magnificent effort!"
The following story was written by Christopher Irish, year 2 and aged seven years, as part of his topic work on water. We thought you would like to read it. Rescued from the Flood One gloomy day fish woke up and looked at his clock - 8.00 a.m. Aaaaaahh yawned fish as he got out of bed and put his slippers on. Pad pad pad creaked the stairs as fish went down the stairs in his gown. Munch munch munch went the cornflakes as fish started to eat his breakfast. Then suddenly he heard a pitter patter pitter patter. Oh no said fish I thought it was going to be a nice day today! In two days time a flood started and fish started to get worried as water streamed into his house. "I wonder what will happen to beautiful house if it gets flooded" said fish worriedly. "Oh no, what about my friends. I will go to see them tomorrow. Right now I will try to get to sleep." But he did not get to sleep because of the patting on the window panes and the roof and by the time he woke up the water was a metre high. Fish got even more worried soon he could not resist it any longer and he got his swim suit on and swam to goat's house. Goat was in his bedroom window. "Everything downstairs is wet" said goat sadly. "Even that painting of the tiger we really liked." "Why don't you go and buy another" "Because there's none left" said goat. "I will tell you what, I will paint another, I know I never told you I was an artist, but I am", said fish proudly. By tomorrow there was a fine picture of a tiger in a jungle. "Oh thank you, thank you" said goat "I will hang it in my bedroom from now on."
On Sunday 24th June we had the Veteran Cyclists using the school as a base for their races; the Friends provided cakes and refreshments. As you can imagine it was very hot! It was a very good day though, and with the donation from race organizer, David Clift, we boosted our funds once again. The friends will also be organizing refreshments at the school's Rounders tournament, being held at the recreation ground on Tuesday 3rd July at 11 am. Also, at School Sports Day on Tuesday 17th July from 1.15pm, also at the recreation ground. Please come and support the school if you can. This year School is hosting the Annual Village Horticultural Show being held at Knapp Farm, Lewknor by kind permission of Mrs Watt the date is SUNDAY 9th SEPTEMBER 2pm Details will be coming around soon, so start planning your entries now! Our last social event this school year is the live music evening. The excellent band Déja Vu are once again going to entertain us on Friday 13th July from 7pm at School. The event is by ticket only (available from School) and prices are £5 for adults, free for accompanied under 11's, and £2 for twelve to sixteen. During the evening we shall be holding an "auction of promises." This is open to everyone and we hope to start around 8pm. We have had some fantastic 'promises' pledged already, but please contact me on 352720 if you have any ideas for more promises. We shall be sending details so that you can make a bid even if you can't make it to the auction.
We had a beautiful sunny day for our annual sponsored trike/bike ride and all the children had a great time during the ride and afterwards cooling off with some well deserved ice lollies. It was lovely to see so many parents there and to have all the school helping and cheering. At the end of this term we will be saying good-bye to Isabella Carroll, Harriet Kotvics, Oliver Magrath and James Picton-Turbervill. We will miss them and wish them good luck. We will also be saying good-bye and a big thank you to Christine Smith who is leaving Krakatoa at the end of the school year. Krakatoa will miss Christine and we all thank her for her commitment and dedication over the years. Our long term project - the 2p kilometre - is progressing well. We have now collected £311.84 well over 335 metres. A big thank you again to all of you who are helping us and to the garage in Postcombe who continues to support us and has so far collected a total of £96.67! We now have someone to take the money personally to Arequipa, Peru. Anna Pelly-Fry is taking part in a car rally through South America in October and will be stopping in Arequipa for 3 days and has agreed to present the money to the Belaunde school so it would be great if we could reach our goal by then.
Icknield Community Education Centre Our new BLUE brochure for 2001/2002 is now out and about and people living in Watlington should be receiving one through their doors in the first fortnight of July. We also distribute to surrounding villages e.g. Christmas Common, Cookley Green etc and into local Libraries and Schools etc but if you do not receive one in this way, please phone us on 01491 613004, leaving your name and address on the answerphone if necessary, and we will send you a copy. Some new courses will be on offer next year - for example, Stress Prevention, Sociology, The Civil War, Photography, more language classes, Creative Writing, 'A book a fortnight', 'Cliveden gardens at rose-time' including an outing to the National Trust property, and a welcome return for Introduction to Oxford not offered recently. - to mention but a few! These are in addition to our usual 'old favourites' which run successfully year after year. Unfortunately this year, we are unable to offer daytime computer classes in the school, but we do have a variety of computer classes on Monday evenings starting at 6.30pm and the brochure also contains details of the large number of computer classes being run at Sonning Common, to which Watlington people will be most welcome. Expansion in the school's pupil numbers is going to cause difficulties for Community Education at the Icknield next year, especially for daytime classes. In 2001/2002, we will be running a number of our daytime activities in other venues around Watlington and Pyrton and I hope students will be understanding and patient as these changes take place. We have also moved office on the site, to the office situated on the end of the Library Block. Ways of contacting us are as follows: by post to Icknield Community Education Centre, Love Lane, Watlington, Oxon OX49 5RB, phone 01491 613004, fax 01491 614873, e-mail icknield.cec@oxfordshire.gov.uk
The time is coming round again for advance preparations for the horticultural show in September and I have a tremendous apology to make to everyone who won a trophy at the 2000 Show. It always takes a few weeks to get the trophies engraved but I have failed totally to ensure they reached the winners. I am really sorry about this. I've had good intentions about delivering them and have tried to deliver a couple only to find the people out. The problem is that there are always too many other things to do. It is obviously very late in the year but I will try to make sure the trophies reach the winners so they can, at least, have a couple of months on the right mantlepiece. Please telephone me and arrange when I can bring the trophy if I don't see you first. Gill Bindoff 01491 612663 |
