PLAYGROUND FOR THE PARISH

Would your children (of all ages) enjoy an adventure playground here, within our parish? It could happen - soon!

Along with the exciting news of the funding of Lewknor Village Hall, comes renewed interest in the creation of a play area alongside the hall. Would you be willing to spare a little of your time to join a small team of parents, who hope to co-ordinate the development of the playground? Now is the time for you and your children to have your say.

All views, advice, and offers of help will be most welcome. Please call: Hazel 352311, Joanna 354689 or Penny 353727.

"Close Shaves" concert in aid of ARC Addington Fund

As one of the audience in St Margaret's Church at the "Close Shaves" concert last Sunday afternoon, 20th May, I want to say what marvellous fun and entertainment the six performers (members of the Bach Choir) put on for us. All the children were made very welcome, including babes-in-arms and were crammed in eight to the pew! They had a great time marching to music around the aisles led by Sergeant Bill who set a comfortable pace for the little legs following him. Thank you for a splendid afternoon of true musical talent and high spirited amusement. Somewhere there must be a lot of hard practising hidden behind them but it never shows! Please come again.

CHURCHYARD MAINTENANCE

Extra volunteers are needed to help mow the grass in St Margaret's Churchyard. A new machine has been purchased to assist in making light of the task, which will enable even the most overgrown areas to be kept under control.

Please contact Robin or Carol Notley at 13 High Street, Lewknor or telephone 354237 if you can help.

DOG FOULING

In an effort to curtail the problem caused by the faeces left by dogs in public places, SODC has decided to commit its legal resources to the campaign. In short, if a member of the public makes a complaint, SODC is prepared to follow this up to the extent, if appropriate, of formal prosecution in court.

In the first instance, the complaint should be made to SODC (Environmental Health) on 01491 823239. It will then be necessary to make a formal statement in writing, specifying a number of details, including the time and location of the incident, a description of the dog and the name of its owner. The complainant will also be required to certify that he/she is willing to appear in court to make a statement. This is because, while SODC is willing to act on behalf of the public, it cannot do so in isolation. Thus, if the matter is to be actively pursued, a complaint must be specific and detailed and, having taken the initiative, the individual concerned must be prepared to assist in prosecuting the matter to its ultimate conclusion.

'RAVES'

As most readers will be aware, Lewknor was selected as a suitable site for a number of noisy and antisocial 'impromptu parties' last summer. The police have stated that they are firmly committed to trying to suppress this activity in 2001. While they can and will act, however, there are limits to what the police can do, these being imposed in the main by a shortage of resources (manpower) and a number of very real constraints embedded within the law of the land. Thus, despite their endeavours, the first local 'rave' of the season actually took place on 12/13 May.

In practical terms, once a 'rave' is well-established, it is very difficult to stop and any attempt to do so risks making the situation worse by provoking confrontational situations, potentially leading to violence. The answer to the problem lies in providing the police with sufficient warning to permit them to act before the 'party' starts. The success of this tactic was reportedly demonstrated recently at Christmas Common, when, acting on a local tip-off, the police were able to arrive on the scene while the sound system was still being set up and the 'party' was moved on.

The message, therefore, is - as soon as you become aware that the organisers of a 'rave' are on site and starting to set up their stall, ring the police. Do not hesitate. Use the 999 facility.

SODC: The out of hours call centre for reporting 'LOUD NOISE' ie an environmental health matter is 01491 824033 and Mr Payne is the contact in the office.

KRAKATOA PLAYGROUP

We had an exciting first half term when the firemen came to visit and we had a gorgeous sunny day for our annual fundraiser event - the sponsored trike ride - when we had great fun pedalling and cheering, enjoyed our refreshing ice lollies and raised some needed money to buy new equipment. This second half term we are happy to welcome Elinor and Ishbel Cumming and Phoebe Haywood. They will be joining the rest of the gang in our Animal Boogie session when some of our talented and musical mums will be playing the piano and leading with the singing and dancing as the children pretend to be jungle creatures and they swing and sway to the music. Continuing with the animal theme for this term we also plan to visit the Well Place Zoo in Ipsden and we will also finish off the term and academic year with our traditional Teddy Bear picnic at the recreation ground.

We are still doing very well on our fundraiser project collecting 1km of 2ps (£800) to help jointly support the construction of Belaunde School in Arequipa, Peru and to build a sensory garden for Lewknor School and Krakatoa. To date (23-5-01) we have collected over £240 (300 metres) thanks to all the children at the school and at playgroup who are eagerly bringing their 2'ps in and to many people in the community who are also supporting us. Special thanks go to Postcombe Service Station and their customers who have so far collected £46.53 and to Edward, Catherine and James Picton-Turbervill who together have collected over £60 from people in Lewknor, family and friends! A collection bottle for 2ps can be found in the library of the school or contact Ana Murray (281602) who will be happy to collect your 2ps.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP SO FAR AND PLEASE KEEP THE 2PS COMING.

FRIENDS OF LEWKNOR SCHOOL

With some of the money raised recently we have bought new games equipment, and paid half towards the infants play tables and sand pit, outside Miss Stoker's classroom. There is also a coach trip organised in June for the pupils not going on field week. Our next fundraiser is on Sunday 24th June, when we provide facilities and refreshments for the "League of Veteran Racing Cyclists." David Clift the race organiser sets two courses, a time trial up the A40 and back; and a circuit around Stoke Talmage. So if you see any competitors, do give them a cheer, it's usually a very hot day! If anyone in the Parish is free for an hour on the 24th to help with refreshments, please contact me at school.

We aim to finish the school year on a high, as the fantastic live band "Déjà vu" have said that they will come and play for us again on Friday 13th July. Entry to the party will be by ticket only, £5 for adults, £2 for twelve to sixteen year olds, and free for accompanied under eleven's. Tickets will be available soon through school. Also on the night we are organising an "Auction of Promises," we have had some great things "promised" already, but please if you have some good ideas contact me at school or on 352720. Everyone is welcome to our auction, as it will be held in the new classroom. Watch out for details!

LETTER To GRAPEVINE

From: Barbara Scott

"For the attention of Lewknor PCC

How shocked were I and a great number of village people to see a Barbeque in our lovely Church Yard; and also to see people sitting around on grave stones eating! I myself was devastated to be told that people were sitting by the tree in memory of my parents but most of all where my beloved sister's remains are.

We have condemmed the young teenagers for their beer cans and cigarette packets under the lych gate, and then turn round and have a barbeque in the actual church yard. To think that there were four funerals of village people in the last year - whatever their loved ones thought is beyond belief!

We hope it will never happen again."

BEST KEPT GARDENS COMPETITION

This year again we hope to judge the gardens towards the end of July.

As in previous years, the gardens will be viewed from the front unless you have given us permission to view the rear garden as well. If you have already requested this, we will presume that you still wish us to view the whole garden.

Anyone else who would like the whole garden  judged - possibly the newcomers to our parish - please let me know either by telephoning 01844 353783 or calling at 2A Hill Road, Lewknor by early July.
