Activities at the Hall

The Public Meeting on 22nd April was well attended and people representing or proposing the following activities attended: Football, cricket, short mat bowls, young people's group for the 7 to 11 year olds, mums and toddlers group. It is planned that most groups wishing to use the Jubilee Hall will start in September, but we hope that there will be some use of the hall during the summer, especially for children's activities.

In the past the following activities have been requested at the hall: Horticultural Club, Senior citizens Luncheon club, Netball, Line Dancing, Badmington, Short Tennis, Keep Fit/Exercise Classes, Archery, Bingo and a Youth Club. If you are interested in any of these activities being provided at the hall or would like to run any of them, please would you register that interest by phoning 352622.

Now that the Jubilee Hall is almost complete, we need to raise £11,000 to equip it. If you wish to hold an event or have an idea for raising funds for the tables, chairs, crockery etc, etc (we can give you a comprehensive list of what is needed) then please phone 352622.

Short Mat Bowls

Jill and David Beechey from the Watlington Bowls Club have very kindly offered to help get a Lewknor Club up and running. This is a very fine opportunity to start our own club in Lewknor with some expert guidance. The young are especially encouraged to learn, so please register your interest by phoning 352622.

NATURE RESERVE NEWS

2001 has been an exciting year at Aston Rowant Nature Reserve with lots going on to improve the reserve both for wildlife and for everyone who comes to visit this fantastic place. For anyone who is not sure, the nature reserve straddles the M40 at the cutting through the Chiltern Hills and can be reached by driving along the Christmas Common road from the A40 at the top of Aston Hill. Park in either the Nature Reserve car park, or if you want to visit the western half, then park in the Chilterns Sculpture Trail car park and cross over the road.

A grant from the Heritage Lottery fund has allowed English Nature to not only buy parts of the rich chalk grassland, previously leased from All Souls college, but also to buy new land from the sale of Hill Farm, Lewknor. So the good news is that Aston Rowant NNR is now bigger and better than ever. Visitors are free to roam across the reserve and the new land has made access much easier. To go with the new fences that have been put up, we have been fitting easy access gates to make getting around when you are on the reserve easier as well. Over the next year we will be changing our existing kissing gates to improve access further. New signs with maps are being designed now and will be up on the reserve this year to help you find your way around.

When you visit the nature reserve, as well as the wealth of flowers, birds and insects, I'm sure most people bump into our sheep flock now and again. We are lambing this year so watch out in April for the little white bundles of fluff tearing around. Unbelievably, 4 of our sheep were caught, killed and butchered illegally on Christmas Eve! On a happier note however, we have recently bought 16 Soay sheep for the reserve and they are now grazing alongside the white Beulah flock. Soays are an ancient breed of sheep that are small and brown with horns and we are hoping that they will help to control the growth of bramble and scrub.

Grazing is essential to maintain the incredible diversity of plants and creatures that thrive on chalk grassland as the new land allows us to graze our sheep flock elsewhere when the sensitive grassland areas need to be rested. Some of the new land even has the potential to develop into rich chalk grassland, but this will take many years of management.

The Dartmoor ponies that came to visit us for the summer were very popular and they are currently grazing another reserve we look after, Barton Hills NNR north of Luton. Hopefully, we will see them again this summer.

We will be running a programme of guided walks and events from April which will include looking at the plants, the butterflies, fungi and even Glow worms. I hope you enjoy visiting the reserve and if you need further information on the reserve or the walks, then please ring us on 01844 351833. Steve Blow

KRAKATOA PRE-SCHOOL

We're travelling the world this half-term, and in style too! We started off flying over the Channel (in a hot air balloon) with some very excited children on board, clutching their passports. Our travels will take us to most parts of the globe, and with the variety of transport we're using - we should all be back by half-term!

Michael Nixey and Faye Gallen have joined us this term and we hope they have a wonderful time at Krakatoa. The "Good Living" evening was a huge success with Morag Bowie and Charlotte Rose organising everything brilliantly - even the weather! There were some very interesting displays of products and informative talks too. Many people took advantage of having a mini aromatherapy or reflexology session, and judging by the increasingly relaxed atmosphere, found them highly beneficial!

We raised just over £400.00, which is a great boost for Krakatoa funds and will go towards buying furniture and equipment for the move to the Parish Hall. A huge thank-you to the organisers and all those who came to display their products, the health professionals, those who donated some wonderful raffle prizes and of course to everyone who came and helped to make the evening such a success.

We are now looking forward to our next event, which will be Krakatoa's annual Trikathon on Wednesday 19th June.

We are holding a General Meeting on Wednesday 15th May at 8pm at the school, everyone is welcome to attend.

SID KIPPER Friday 12th April

Sid Kipper is a very funny man. He lives in Norfolk, a quiet rural life which he told us all about through hilarious songs and stories.

He is multi-talented, playing as many as 6 different instruments including the very ornate and wonderful walnut shells and a splendid accordian (same as an organ but without the extra octaves that would make it difficult to carry!) Not to mention the Norfolk pipes - to you and me bits of bamboo but surprisingly resonant.

He came to Lewknor as part of the SODC initiative 'to bring entertainment to the villages' which has been responsible for the Heart of England Jazz Band and the Toy Theatre.

It was a very enjoyable, light hearted evening for all ages. He went on from us to Leamington where he was 'pick of the day' at the National Folk Festival in one of the National newspapers.

PARISH COUNCIL NEWS

Vacancy for a Parish Councillor

A vacancy has occurred on the Parish Council. The duties involved provide an opportunity to gain a better understanding of local government and, possibly, even to influence its conduct. Anyone interested in filling this position is invited to contact the Chair of the Parish Council, Mrs Bindoff on 01491 612663.

Adoption of new Code of Conduct by Lewknor Parish Council

A recent change in Government legislation has introduced a new Code of Conduct for all councillors, including those at Parish Council level. Lewknor Parish Council resolved to adopt the new Code with effect from 15th April 2002. Members of the public who wish to examine the new code may do so at the offices of South Oxfordshire District council between 9.30am and 4pm on working days.

Disposal of Garden Waste

It is a criminal offence to dispose of household waste outside the curtilage of a private property. This includes the waste generated by mowing lawns and trimming hedges which may not be disposed of by dumping it on the verge or in hedgerows. Should such an offence result in a formal prosecution, the potential consequences could be very serious. Action can only be taken, however, if the time and place of an incident is known, along with the identity of the offender. Members of the public who observe specific cases of fly-tipping (of this or any other nature) should report such incidents to the Environment Agency. This can be done anonymously by calling Freephone 0800 807060.

There are three acceptable means of disposing of garden waste. It can be deposited at a site at Ewelme (on the A4130, Wallingford-Henley road) - further information on composting can be obtained by calling 01865 815281. It can be collected from your property in SODC- supplied green plastic bags (which may be purchashed from, for instance, the Town Hall in Thame). Or it can be composted on-site. In the latter case, there has been a number of subsidised programmes to supply suitable bins; each household should shortly be advised of the latest initiative but details are available via the Free Trial Hotline on 0870 844 3006.

Attention All Parents!

The PCC has recently approved the appointment of Latimer Contracting to restore the Lych Gate at St Margaret's Church at a cost of approximately £5,000.

This will return the lych gate to its former glory during the Jubilee Year. Work will involve lifting the entire structure to replace the massive beams, upon which it rests, re-roofing and restoring the lych gate where it has been vandalised. We shall be installing security lighting for the safety of the parisioners at night and in the winter.

Please will you impress upon all children and young people the need to respect the lych gate and impress upon them how much the project is costing. It would be very sad if it were vandalised again after spending so much money.
