LEWKNOR
PARISH RECREATION GROUND AND HALL The
trustees held their annual meeting on Monday 20th September. Reports were made of the use of the
recreation ground and the Jubilee Hall during the past year and the annual
financial statement was approved. The
trustees are hoping to have the Hall back in use in October after the floor,
which was damaged by flooding, has been replaced. The fact that the hall has not been able to
be used for a few weeks has made us all realise what an important facility it
provides for our parish. Lots of users
have had to make other arrangements or just wait for the hall to be open
again. Over the next year we are
hoping to improve facilities at the hall by installing some acoustic panels and , in the long term, we want to build an extension for
storage of tables, chairs and equipment. The
trustees were very sorry to learn that Mrs Jessie Purnell
has decided to stand down as a trustee after serving the charity since it was
established in 1982. She was one of
the first people in the parish to join a committee to raise funds for a new
village hall way back in 1969 and has worked tirelessly ever since to provide
our community with a playing field and hall.
Jessie thinks that now the goal has been achieved it is time for other
people to take over. She thinks it is
time for her to retire and relax a bit but has already volunteered to run the
Christmas Bingo as usual!! Village
communities depend on people like Jessie.
She really cares about Lewknor and wants to make sure that the parish
has good facilities. She has put in so
much time and effort to get the hall up and running it would be impossible to
total it. There can’t be many
ways of raising funds that Jessie hasn’t been involved in -she even
talks people out of taking the prize money they have rightly won - ‘You don’t want to take that
out of the funds do you’ is impossible to resist! The trustees would like to thank her so
much for everything she has done. We
are all glad that she is still going to be around to support us in the
future. NEW
TRUSTEES ARE NEEDED. Please volunteer
to help your community. All you need
is an interest in local facilities and a willingness to give some time and
effort to manage and develop the recreation ground and hall for the benefit
of local people. In addition to
recruiting more trustees a TREASURER and a SECRETARY are badly needed. Caroline Notley
has done an excellent job as treasurer but has other demands on her time
through her involvement as a governor of local schools and support for St
Margaret’s parochial church council.
She has already continued for over a year since she said she needed to
give up as treasurer for the charity so the trustees are really desperate to
find someone willing to take this role on.
The charity accounts are not complicated and there are established
systems in place so a take over from Caroline should be fairly easy to
manage. We
have managed for some time without a secretary but are struggling to keep up
with the administration of the charity and really need someone to help with
it. We need someone to take minutes of
trustees’ meetings, to deal with correspondence and to help with
applications for grants etc. Both the
post of treasurer and secretary are voluntary. The charity is very small and does not have
funds to pay for these services so the trustees depend on people to offer their
help because they want to put something back into the community where they
live. Please
contact Gill Bindoff (01491 612663) if you would
like some more information about becoming a trustee, treasurer or
secretary. Your community needs your
help. NB - Update on
Hall Floor - 27th September The
old floor has been removed, remedial works are being carried out this week
and we are hoping the new floor will go down next week; this would mean that the hall would be back
in use from Monday 11th October. At
worst we would expect a delay of no more than a week to Monday 18th October,
unless something unforeseen crops up. The
annual show on 12th September was the unusual popular parish event in spite
of some windy and wet weather. Entries
in the classes were up on last year and there was a very good display in the
barn in Knapp Farm. There was good
support for the stalls and for the final auction of produce and the show
raised £862.00. This year the proceeds
of the show go to the Jubilee hall.
Many thanks to everyone who helped
with organising the show, who entered the classes and helped on the
day and a special ‘thank you’ to Mrs Susan Watt who very kindly welcomes the show at Knapp
Farm every year. The
trophies were awarded as follows:- THE
MIDDLETON CUP: for the overall winner of the Show - Caroline Notley

and Zadie Smith to discuss “White Teeth”. The only requirement to be eligible to be
involved in a recording is to have read the novel and to be prepared to ask
questions of the author or to make comments on the book. If

has been an adventurous and somewhat nail-biting beginning to the school year
at Not
only do we have a new Committee but we also welcome our new staff; Hayley, Becky, Jeanette and Jan have joined Denise and
they are all teaming together to provide the children with a wonderful
environment in which they can develop and learn. This
term our topic is on Autumn and the children have been looking at the trees
around them bearing fruit, berries and their different leaves. This will naturally lead into harvest
festival, hops, leaves changing colour and the change of weather as we travel
through the season. The children have
particularly enjoyed going for walks and exploring their temporary
surroundings. Please note that
Half-Term is from THURSDAY 21st October - FRIDAY 29th October
